Few children receive dental care before recommended age of one year

Less than one per cent of healthy urban children surveyed in Toronto had received dental care by the recommended age of 12 months and less than two per cent had seen a dentist by the age of 24 months. Children most susceptible to cavities were least likely to receive early dental care, according to the study by Dr. Jonathon Maguire, a pediatrician and researcher at St. Michael’s Hospital.

Of the 2,505 children around 4 years of age who were surveyed from 2011-13, 39 per cent had never been to a dentist. The children were part of TARGet Kids! (The Applied Research Group for Kids!), a unique collaboration between doctors and researchers from St. Michael’s Hospital and The Hospital for Sick Children. The program follows children from birth with the aim of preventing common problems in the early years and understanding their impact on health and disease later in life.

Dr. Maguire’s study was published today in the journal Pediatrics.

The study found never having been to a dentist was associated with younger age, lower family income, prolonged bottle use and higher daily intake of sweetened drinks such as juice. With each one-cup increase in the amount of sweetened drinks consumed daily, the odds of never having visited a dentist increased by 20 per cent.

Of children who had visited a dentist, 24 per cent had at least one cavity.

States where the most people go to the dentist

79071545

Clean teeth are supposed to be good for heart health, and a way to avoid dentures and to avoid the drilling, which comes with cavities as well. Some people are more willing to go to the dentist than others. It turns out that this varies wildly by state and region.

A new Gallup poll shows that states in the Northeast are the ones where residents are most likely to have visited a dentist in the past 12 months. States in the South are where people are least likely to.

In detail: For the third year in a row, Connecticut residents were the most likely to say they visited a dentist in the last 12 months. It is one of only three states, the others being Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where nearly three in four residents visited a dentist. Just over half of the residents in Mississippi say the same, coming in last for dental care among the 50 states.

Gallup’s conclusion about the differences among states and regions is almost obvious. People who live in poorer states are less likely to have the money to visit health care professionals. They are also less likely to be insured. The research organization speculates that enrollment in insurance programs because of the Affordable Care Act may allow more people to visit dentists.

Is Your Smile as Bright as it Could Be?

Dental implant systems

A large amount of your self-image and confidence originates in your smile. About 88 percent of Canadians feel that oral health is a key part of their overall health, and society places a great value on the smile as a way to convey confidence and health.

If you don’t feel as confident about your teeth as you should, a cosmetic dentist can be a great source of help. Here are three key ways cosmetic dentistry can help you feel good about your teeth:

1. Dental implants: Did you know that about 6 percent of Canadians are missing all of their teeth, and that the average Canadian has about 2.5 missing or decayed teeth? It can be tough to smile with confidence when you’re missing one or more teeth — this is where dental implant specialists can help. There are a few different kinds of implants that dental implant specialists can surgically place in your jaw where the missing tooth once was, including zirconia, all on four and immediate dental implants in addition to the traditional implants.

2. Invisible braces: While uncommon, adults occasionally need orthodontic work done to correct improper jaw alignment or crooked teeth. Invisible braces are a great solution for any adult looking to correct their teeth without the unsightly appearance of metal braces.

What You Must Know About Caring For Your Teeth

What You Must Know About Caring For Your Teeth

Do you worry about your teeth often? If you’re the same as most people, then you may say that you don’t think about these things a lot. When your teeth do not hurt or bother you, it is easy to forget about them and neglect them. That’s why it’s a smart idea to do as much dental care as you can before a problem arises, using these tips.

If you are an adult over the age of 50, use alcohol-free mouthwashes. Many times, mature adults have mouth sensitivities. Mouthwash, with alcohol included, only makes these worse. Try to find a mouthwash which has fluoride instead of alcohol. For best results, rinse your mouth two times a day.

If you become nervous when you are being worked on by a dentist, you should find ways to keep yourself calm. When you’ve come up with a helpful method, practice it before your appointment, during it, and after it. If you can do this, you will no longer have to dread going to the dentist.

If you notice any blood during brushing, you should go see a periodontist or dentist. If left untreated, gums that bleed regularly can cause serious problems. Gum disease can cause bones loss, tooth loss, infections, and diabetes.

How To Locate A Reputable Experienced Dentist

You are trying to find a great cosmetic dentist, but having trouble sorting through the long list of names on your computer. So how do you actually find a great cosmetic dentist? Follow our list of tips to get started on your search and narrow it down to the provider you are looking for.

Dentists’ offices are busy places. Just because they haven’t called with test results, don’t assume everything is fine or that the cosmetic dentist’s staff is incompetent. Call and remind them you haven’t yet received your test results. Be proactive in your own health care.

Local dental schools can be a good source of cosmetic dentists and information about cosmetic dentists. They can give recommendations or information about cosmetic dentists who currently teach at the school. This is a very solid place to begin a search for a brand new cosmetic dentist.

Good cosmetic dentists don’t advertise. This was once completely frowned upon in the profession. The best cosmetic dentists still don’t advertise, except for the white pages. Find cosmetic dentists that are only listed in the white pages and not elsewhere. They provide the best opportunity for getting the best quality of care.

A Compassionate Dentist Can Help You Overcome Dental Anxiety

If you have anxiety about going to the dentist, rest assured that you are not alone. Many people have fears about dental visits. Many of those fears stem from past dental experiences that were unpleasant. Sometimes people simply fear the unknown, which is perfectly understandable.

3d word Solution The key to overcoming dental anxiety is to find the right dental care provider. If you suffer from dental anxiety, look for a dentist who is compassionate, reassuring and patient. Furthermore, the entire office staff should work to reassure you and help you feel comfortable.

In the past, it was hard to find a dentist that truly understood patients’ fears and worked to alleviate them. Today, however, there are dentists, like the ones at Genesis Dental of Riverton, who actually specialize in working with anxious patients. They work hard to put even the most anxious of patients at ease.

What is Good Oral Hygiene?

Good oral hygiene results in a mouth that looks and smells healthy. This means:

  • Your teeth are clean and free of debris
  • Gums are pink and do not hurt or bleed when you brush or floss
  • Bad breath is not a constant problem

If your gums do hurt or bleed while brushing or flossing, or you are experiencing persistent bad breath, see your dentist. Any of these conditions may indicate a problem.

Your dentist or hygienist can help you learn good oral hygiene techniques and can help point out areas of your mouth that may require extra attention during brushing and flossing.

How is Good Oral Hygiene Practiced?
Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your teeth and gums. Healthy teeth not only enable you to look and feel good, they make it possible to eat and speak properly. Good oral health is important to your overall well-being.

Daily preventive care, including proper brushing and flossing, will help stop problems before they develop and is much less painful, expensive, and worrisome than treating conditions that have been allowed to progress.

DNA Testing and Dentistry

Over the last decade, DNA testing has really come into its own. This is largely due (in my opinion, anyway) to TV shows like CSI and the million spinoffs it spawned, all of which put an entertaining focus on forensics. And, I have to admit, it’s all pretty cool. Whenever I watch an old movie, and somebody murders someone and just washes off the blood on their shirt, I’m thinking: “That wouldn’t fly today — they would still catch you because of the arm hair you left behind and the blood residue still present on your washed arm.”

We also know that DNA is being performed on older remains to get the genetic makeup of people passed. Again, very interesting stuff.

Until now, DNA testing has usually been reserved for the dead (both recent and long-dead), and occasionally makes its way into our living rooms via TV, where “let’s find my baby’s daddy” is standard afternoon TV fare. But increasingly, DNA testing is being used on living people for health reasons, to perhaps give an insight as to what your body may hold for you in the future. And dental DNA testing is leading the way.
